AbSec would like to acknowledge those working to support Aboriginal families

These awards celebrate individuals and organisations that have made remarkable contributions and outstanding achievements to improving outcomes for our children and families. The awards will be presented at the Conference Dinner.

Award categories


Community Member of the Year

This award recognises the contributions of an Aboriginal person to the welfare and wellbeing of Aboriginal families and their community. Awarded to an Aboriginal community member that has demonstrated outstanding commitment to, and positive impact on, the wellbeing of families and communities.

Nomination criteria:

  • Why do you think this person should be nominated for Community Member of the year?
  • How has this community member demonstrated their commitment to the wellbeing of Aboriginal families? Provide examples.
  • What has been the impact of their efforts and actions for Aboriginal families?
  • Is there a current or future project this community member is involved in, that further demonstrates commitment to, and positive impact on, the wellbeing of Aboriginal families and communities? If yes, please describe.

Carer of the Year

This award recognises the outstanding contributions of a carer for an Aboriginal child or young person.

Nomination criteria:

  • Why do you think this person should be nominated for Carer of the Year?
  • How has this carer demonstrated their commitment to supporting Aboriginal children to thrive, and to stay connected to their family, community and culture? Provide examples.
  • What has been the impact of their efforts and actions for children and families?

Practitioner of the Year

This award recognises an Aboriginal practitioner's excellence in achieving positive outcomes for Aboriginal children and young people, their families and communities.

Nomination criteria:

  • Why do you think this person should be nominated for Practitioner of the Year?
  • How has this practitioner demonstrated excellence in working with Aboriginal families? Provide examples.
  • What has been the impact or outcomes achieved for Aboriginal families?

ACCO of the Year

This award recognises an Aboriginal community-controlled organisation (ACCO) demonstrating excellence in service delivery to their community, achieving lasting positive outcomes for Aboriginal children and young people, their families and communities.

Nomination criteria:

  • Why do you think this organisation should be nominated for ACCO of the Year?
  • How has this organisation demonstrated excellence in service delivery to Aboriginal families and communities? Provide examples.
  • What has been the impact or outcomes achieved by this organisation for Aboriginal families and the broader community?

Walking Together Award

This award recognises the contribution of a non-Aboriginal agency in partnering with Aboriginal communities in service design and delivery, achieving outcomes for Aboriginal families and communities. It could include a team of an organisation.

Nomination criteria:

  • Why do you think this team or organisation should be nominated for the Walking Together Award?
  • How has this team or agency demonstrated excellence in developing promising innovations to service design or delivery? Provide examples.
  • What has been the impact or outcomes achieved by this team or organisation for Aboriginal families?

Young Person of the Year

This award recognises the achievements of an Aboriginal young person aged under 25 years for their leadership and contribution to their community.

Nomination criteria:

  • Why do you think this person should be nominated for Young Person of the Year?
  • Outline with examples the young person's achievements.
  • What has been the impact of their efforts and actions?
